Con aquello de que me gusta presumir el talento mexicano, esta vez presento una entrevista con Carlos Huber, el mexicano que está haciendo historia en la perfumería en México con su nueva línea Arquiste. Su pasión por las esencias lo llevaron de arquitecto a perfumista.
I must confess I really like to make known mexican talent, for that matter, this time I wanna share an interview with Carlos Huber, a guy making history in Mexico, with his new brand Arquiste. His passion for scents led him a new triumph from being an arquitect to a new path in perfumery.

Para hacer la maestria en Restauración y Diseño con Arquitectura Historica (Historic Preservation), en Columbia University.
-¿Cómo y cuándo nace tu interés en la perfumería?
Desde la infancia; pero más a fondo yo creo que a partir de la adolescencia, de los viajes… aprendiendo a ser más sibarita, disfrutar ciertas cosas más sutiles, y a tener una afinidad por una colonia, un perfume.
-¿Cómo surge Arquiste?
Por la pasion que tengo por la historia, y la inquietud de acercarla mas a una experiencia intima y sensorial.
-¿De qué manera logras capturar momentos como los de tu infancia o demás en un perfume?
Trabajando como detective; investigando las notas del momento que queremos evocar. Tomando en cuenta el ambiente, la vegetacion, la arquitectura, la gente, la moda, el clima... Y sacando ingredientes a partir de estas pistas.

¿Cuál fue la primera loción que usaste?
La Polo de Ralph Lauren, la clasica de la botella verde del perfumista Carlos Benaim.
-¿Qué aroma te trae los mejores recuerdos?
Como perfume, Dolce & Gabbana Men, porque me recuerda cuando pasaba los veranos estudiando en Italia, y tenia 18.
Como aroma natural, el olor del mar, porque me recuerda a la playa de Mexico, Acapulco con amigos, etc.
-¿Cuáles son las 5 piezas clave en tu guardarropa.
Saco azul marino de picquet; jeans de Uniqlo de colores; mocasines; corbata tejida de charvet o Ralph Lauren; alpargatas.
-Define tu estilo
Hmmm soy medio clasico la verdad. Sobre todo admiro el estilo "facil", la confianza de los Italianos de saber como vestirse "bien"... Admiro mucho la cualidad de ponerse algo, verse bien, y no verse producido.
-Por último ¿si tu vida hasta ahora tuviera que ser un aroma, cuál seria?
Creo que es dificil asignarse un unico aroma.... Mi vida en Mexico tiene muchas referencias: Flor de Naranja agua de colonia Sanborns
(De verdad me sigue encantando), Nardos de las florerias de Mexico, el olor de la tortilla de maiz, etc.
Mi tiempo en Espana se marco por la lavanda y el romero. En Italia me acuerdo mucho de las panaderias en la manana... Y aqui en NY, el olor de la humedad, de la sal del rio Hudson y la bahia de NY.

-¿How did you get to New York from Mexico City?
I came to New York to obtain a Master’s degree in Historic Preservation, at Columbia University. After graduating I worked with the Store Development team in charge of the architecture and design of the Ralph Lauren flagships, before embarking on Arquiste and launching my independent career as architect and perfume creator.
-¿When did you start being interested in perfumery?
I’ve been very sensitive to scents since childhood; but in a more in-depth was I suppose from adolescence…from travels…learning how to appreciate certain things and understanding the the cultural value behind things like wine, perfume, fashion, beauty and craftsmanship. The pleasure in being a gentleman, in having a personal style or affinity for a scent.
-¿How did Arquiste come about?
From the passion I have for history, and the intention to create a more intimate, sensory experience.
-¿How do you capture the scent of something from the past?
Working as a detective; investigating the notes present in the moment I want to evoke. Taking into account the environment, the vegetation, the architecture, people and fashion and extracting the ingredients from those clues.

¿What was the first cologne or perfume you ever used?
Polo de Ralph Lauren, the classic green bottle from perfumer Carlos Benaim.
-¿Which scents bring you back in time?
As a perfume, Dolce & Gabbana Men, because it was my first perfume to use out ‘on the prowl’
As a natural scent, the smell of the sea, because it reminds me of the beach, Acapulco with my friends, summers with the people I love in Ibiza..
-Your 5 musts in your closet.
Blue picquet jacket, Uniqlo jeans in funny colors; vintage moccasins; Charvet or Ralph Lauren knit ties…and I love espadrilles ;)
-Define your style:
Hmmm i’m actually very traditional. Above all things, I admire ‘ease’ in style. The confidence in certain people in ‘dressing well’, without feeling over-produced.
-Last question; if you could think of a scent that represented your life so far, what would it be?
I think its difficult to assign one individual scent to a life. Mi life in Mexico has given me great references: Orange blossom water from Sanborn’s, tuberoses from corner flower-shops, the chalky smell of corn tortillas in the kitchen, etc.
My time spent in Spain was marked by the lavender and Rosemary in Ibiza. From Italy, I remember the smell of fresh-baked bread early in the morning, wafting through Piazza della Signoria- after going out we’d go for a cornetto and a glass of milk.
And since I’ve lived in New York, for the last five years, the humidity, the smell of the Hudson River, of the salty (even mossy) water always makes me happy.
